Neighbors Say Mom, Kids Terrorized Community April 28, 2009
Neighbors Say Mom, Kids
Terrorized CommunityMEMPHIS, Tenn. – Some neighbors in North Memphis say one family is terrorizing their block. The mother and her daughters are accused of beating-up two people and the teenage sons are in hot water too.
Neighbors living around that house say they could tell story after story of how they’ve been harassed by a single family, but this expands beyond neighborhood violence.
Six children in state custody, their mother behind bars, it’s the result of months of violence and problems on Calvert Avenue.
“It feels good to be able to walk out of my house and not be threatened, harassed…and take my grandson to the park and have a good time,” said Robin Marr.
Marr said for months, she and many of her neighbors have been terrorized by Mary Vaught and her children.
Marr filed an order of protection against Mary Vaught five months ago, but she said that didn’t stop the violence.
She remembers recently when another neighbor tried to turn their car around in Mary Vaught’s driveway. She said the driver was attacked with sticks and bricks, causing more than $5,000 worth of damage to his car.
When he stepped out of the truck, one of the children hit him in the back of the head and busted his head,” she said.
Marr said the violence toward her and many of her neighbors began when they started asking Vaught’s children to behave and stop harassing them. Marr knew the Vaught family was having a difficult time and said she even offered to lend a helping hand.
“I tried to help them when they were down on their luck,” she said. “They had no utilities. The mother was in and out. The children weren’t being taken care of. I was nice to them.”
“Somebody has to take charge of the children,” said Minister Braddock, who lives across the street. “Those kids would play out in the street until three in the morning. Sometimes it would be pouring down rain, or storming and they’d be running up and down the street.”
Mary Vaught was arrested early this week for violating the protection order Marr filed against her.
Two of Vaught’s six children have missed a combined 44 days of school and were tardy 47 times this year alone.
“In this case, we filed a petition with this parent, petitioned the court to have those children placed in protective custody,” said Harold Collins, the truancy coordinator for Shelby County.
As a result, the Department of Children services removed six children from the home. Their ages range from 8 to 17.
“Anytime you have a 15 and 16-year-old that are that violent, they need some help and now the state has stepped in,” said Marr.

FAST FACTS:
- 48 year old Mary Vaught and daughters in jail for vandalism and assault
- Attack this week was second since October in neighborhood
- Victim says this week’s attack could have been prevented
(Memphis 01/23/2009) 50 year old Robin Marr says she is like most of the neighbors on Calvert. She is afraid of the family who lives across the street from her.
“I’m terrified of them. I fear for my life,” said Marr.
Neighbors say police are called there regularly because 48 year old Mary Vaught, her 22 year old daughter Shirley and her other younger children are always making trouble with neighbors. Just this week they were arrested for beating a man who turned around in their driveway. They caused and nearly $4,000 worth of damage to his Acura SUV. They beat him and it with sticks, bricks and a broken metal crutch.
“The incident the other day, it wouldn’t have happened, if the system had of did what it was supposed to do,” said Marr.
Marr says the same foursome beat her just this past October. It all started when she called police after they made verbal threats, threw eggs at her home and trash over her fence. When police arrived the family didn’t back down. In fact, that’s when they beat her down.
Marr said, “These people knocked my teeth out. They broke a blood vessel in my eye. They stomped and kicked. I was forced to take an emergency vacation because I drive for a living. I couldn’t work and all they got was a hit on the hand. They were back out before I got home from the hospital the next day.”
Marr is left with mounds of medical bills. She got an order of protection against the mother and oldest daughter but she says the threats have never stopped. When she tried to have them re-arrested she was told she didn’t have enough proof.
“This is the fourth time and ya’ll tell me I don’t have enough evidence. They could have killed me in front of the police because the police did not know what they had and I think it’s time for it to stop,” said Marr.
The Shelby County District Attorney’s office says they initially told Marr she didn’t have enough evidence but later changed their minds. They said after that, Marr failed to come back down to their office to swear out a warrant against the Vaught family members who violated the order of protection.
Meanwhile, News Channel 3 has learned the Department of Human Services is investigating whether or not the minor children living in the Vaught household are in an unsafe environment.
Mary Vaught, her 22 year old daughter Shirley are incarcerated at the Shelby County Criminal Justice Center on Vandalism charges. Two of her younger daughters are being held in juvenile court one on a vandalism charge, the other on an assault charge.

Facebook, Google and Blackberry Contact Sync – Never lose Contacts when you lose a handset! April 25, 2009
I recently had to replace my Blackberry handset (because I dropped it and irreparably broke the handset speaker… I could text and surf, but I couldn’t hear anyone on the phone)
Thanks to Google sync though, I avoiding the dreaded problem of manually re entering all my contacts. Blackberry handsets by default only save contacts to the handset memory and not to the SIM card, you have to manually enter each contact to the SIM. Google sync links contacts in your Gmail address book and GTalk chat list to the names in your Blackberry handset. Of course you create some double entries, but I would rather have double entries than no entries! So when I syncd my replacement handset, the majority of my contacts came through. You will still lose numbers of which you have no email address and you’ll have entries for every email address, even without a phone number. To solve the problem of these orphan numbers and addresses, now you can sync Facebook to your Blackberry contacts. Since we naturally add everyone we meet these days to Facebook, the next step is to sync that person to your Blackberry contact. At first glance, it looks like this has to be done one at a time, but I’m sure a sync all will be available soon. Between these two tools, I don’t think I’ll ever lose another contact!
